A guide to Mallorca’s hidden beaches

Mallorca’s beaches are legendary. From the small, sheltered coves, known as calas, to the long Caribbeanesque stretches of white sand, everyone longs to have fun in the sun here. Everyone also wants to avoid the crowds, so here’s our guide to some of the island’s more secluded spots. Just remember to go prepared: good walking shoes, sunscreen, an umbrella, food and plenty of water—all the essentials for a great beach day out.

Es Caragol

This wild natural beach not far from our hotel can only be reached on foot. Follow the signs to Ses Salines lighthouse and park your car on this road. Walk along the coast for about 30 minutes, which is a treat in itself, before you find yourself in paradise. A crescent-shaped sandy bay flanked by dunes and no facilities, which is precisely its charm.

Cala Varques

Leave as early as you can and take the road that runs parallel to the coast, past Santanyí and Sa Teulera, inland from Porto Colom and Cales de Mallorca to the municipality of Manacor. Parking is available two kilometres from the beach, then after a walk through the forest, reward yourselves with a refreshing swim in the turquoise waters of Cala Varques, a beautiful 90-metre sandy cove with a bohemian vibe and great snorkelling. Well worth the journey.

Cala Magraner

Also in the southeast is Cala Magraner, a beautiful pebbly cove 15 kilometres before Porto Cristo. Although it’s a 40-minute hike, the dramatic location at the end of a torrent surrounded by cliffs is otherworldly and the sea is crystal clear. This is also a great place to hike or climb the rocks, with other small calas nearby. Off the beaten track and out of this world.

Cala Murta

For pure nature in the island’s north, head to the rugged Formentor peninsula to Cala Murta, Mallorquín for the ‘myrtle’ trees that surround this lovely beach. Located 15 kilometres from Port de Pollensa, it’s a good 2-kilometre walk from where you park your car, but this out-of-the-way haven is a sight to behold.

Formentor Beach

One of the most northern points on the island, Formentor Beach is a delight of white sand and wild scenery, where you can enjoy sunbathing and revelling in the beauty of life. Alternatively, the snorkelling is fantastic, plus there are watersports like paddle boats, SUP, windsurfing, and canoeing. There are amenities like sunbeds, toilets and places to eat, so just lie back and relax. You’re on holiday.
