From beginners to pros, cyclists love the island of Mallorca. Riders from all over the world visit all year round, especially during the cooler months. The deep south and southeast hit differently compared with the mountainous north. This relatively flat region famed for its beautiful beaches, dramatic coastline, and rural scenery is historically known for its salt, with the Ses Salines salt mines at its epicentre. Nowadays, Mallorca’s south is one of the top cycling tourist destinations in the Mediterranean and here are some of our favourite routes.
Cycle Ses Salines
With our hotel in Ses Salines as your starting point, there are so many great rides that take in all the best of the south. Try the easy two-hour Iglesia Ses Salines to Porto Petro loop, adding in Colònía de Sant Jordi if you feel like it. Or head west to S’Estanyol de Migjorn, around a 50-minute ride away. Other options include Ses Salines to Taloiot de Can Jordi—a Talayotic settlement—to Santanyí to Es Llombards to Cap de Ses Salines—the southernmost tip with a lighthouse—and back home, which will clock up 50 kilometres. Or you could meander to villages you’d like to explore like Santanyí or Es Llombards. The island is your oyster.
Llucmajor – Ride the island’s cycling capital
Once the site of a 1349 battle, Llucmajor is often considered the cycling capital of Mallorca. 15 kilometres southeast of Palma Airport, the largest municipality on the island has around 200 kilometres of dedicated cycling routes. One of our top picks is an intermediate circular ride for the fit that runs over 50 kilometres and three hours. Start in Llucmajor and head south on Camí Vell de Cala Pi via S’Estanyol de Migjorn through Sa Rapita and Ses Covetes. Cycle back up north past the Es Trenc salt mines and through the wetlands of Salobrar Natural Park, taking Camí des Palmer back to Llucmajor. A southern coast classic.
Sant Salvador – Race to the top
Have an inclination for incline? Head to the Llevant Mountains in the southeast. Try this challenging but enjoyable climb up to Sant Salvador Hermitage from the Ma-4010, a couple of kilometres east of Felanitx. Enjoy your ride through the forests, past the cross known as Creu de Sant Salvador, to the monastery, Ermita de Sant Salvador, right at the top with 360-degree views. Well worth the burn.
Look forward to welcoming you—and your bikes—soon. We will be pleased to rent one of our bikes or recommend some specialised shops in the area too!
