The best time to visit Mallorca: autumn

Autumn is in the air. Here on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, it may not be time for changing leaves, sweaters and boots just yet, but the kids are back to school and the holidaymakers are back to work, so things are a little quieter and the weather a little cooler. Here are some of our favourite things to do in Autumn, one of the best times to discover the island.

HIKE THE TRAMUNTANA

Now that the temperatures have dropped slightly, it’s a more enjoyable time to explore the Tramuntana mountains that form the backbone of Mallorca. The UNESCO World Heritage Site spans from the southwest to the northeast with countless trails and walks through unspoiled nature. One of our top routes starts in the picture-perfect village of Valldemossa, carved into a mountainside with terraced fields and golden sandstone houses. Walk through the holm oak forests through the Cairats valley up to Puig Gros, a peak with panoramic views. Remember to wear suitable shoes or boots, take everything you need, including water, food, and sunscreen, and always check the weather forecast before embarking on your adventure.

EMBRACE THE ISLAND’S CULTURAL LIFE

If you prefer the comforting hustle and bustle of the city over the vastness of nature, Autumn is a great time in Palma. This year, the annual Nit de l’Art takes place on 21 September from 6 pm. All the museums and galleries open their doors to the public so you can check out all the latest in contemporary art at back-to-back exhibitions and open houses. This event is an absolute must for art enthusiasts and social butterflies. If you’re on the island in October, don’t miss Evolution Film Festival, another big event on Mallorca’s cultural calendar.

EXPLORE THOSE BEAUTIFUL BEACHES

Again, this time of year means the crowds have dispersed so it’s time to enjoy those beaches. From our home of Ses Salines, you are within easy reach of lots of great calas, from Cala Llombards to Cala Santanyí to the long Caribbeanesque stretch of white sand known as Es Trenc. Check out Our Guide to Mallorca’s Hidden Beaches for more inspiration and plan a day trip with a picnic or a paella lunch at a local restaurant. The best way to spend a sunny day in Autumn—and induce plenty of envy back home.
