Local Stories – Majorcan ceramics today: tradition, clay and modern design

With our Local Stories series, we love shining a light on the people, crafts and traditions that shape Mallorca’s cultural identity. Over the years, we’ve shared stories about local producers, artisans and creative brands that keep the island’s heritage alive while adapting it to modern times. These stories are part of what makes Mallorca so special: a place where tradition is not frozen in the past, but constantly evolving.

One of the clearest examples of this living heritage is Majorcan ceramics. From humble clay workshops to internationally recognised design studios, pottery on the island continues to reflect both centuries-old knowledge and contemporary creativity.

From rural craft to contemporary design

Ceramics have been part of everyday life in Mallorca for generations. Historically, pottery workshops were essential to rural communities, producing practical objects such as water jugs, plates, storage jars and roof tiles. Clay was sourced locally, shaped by hand and fired in traditional wood kilns, following techniques passed down within families.

Over time, this craft has evolved. While many artisans still work with traditional methods such as wheel throwing and hand moulding, modern workshops now combine heritage techniques with updated designs, new glazes and contemporary forms. Sustainability has also become increasingly important, with many producers using natural materials, local clay and energy-efficient firing systems.

What makes Majorcan ceramics so distinctive is this balance between past and present. You’ll find earthy textures and organic shapes inspired by the island’s landscape, alongside minimalist designs that fit perfectly into modern interiors. The Mediterranean influence is always present: in colour palettes, finishes and the relaxed, functional beauty of each piece.

Ceramic workshops keeping the tradition alive

Several workshops and brands across the island are helping shape the future of Majorcan ceramics while staying deeply rooted in tradition.

One of the best-known names is Huguet Mallorca, a family-run company famous for handcrafted hydraulic cement tiles. Their designs combine traditional patterns with contemporary aesthetics and are now used in architectural projects around the world.

In the village of Pòrtol, historically known as Mallorca’s pottery centre, you’ll find workshops such as Terra Cuita. Here, artisans continue to produce handmade pieces using traditional kilns and local clay, preserving the village’s strong ceramic identity.

Another contemporary studio worth mentioning is Fang i Fang, which focuses on small-batch production, minimalist forms and sustainable processes. Their work reflects the modern face of Mallorcan ceramics: simple, functional and deeply connected to the island’s natural environment.

Together, these workshops represent the diversity of today’s ceramic scene, from architectural elements to tableware and decorative pieces, all united by craftsmanship and respect for material.
