The late-and-great British photographer Martin Parr once described photography as a way of “collecting” your memories. There is no better place to collect them than Mallorca, a Mediterranean island of great geographical and visual contrast.
Writer George Sand described the majestic landscape as “one of those views that completely overwhelm one…. All that a poet or painter might dream of, nature has created here.” From beaches to mountains and fields to sea, countless great shots await, offering different colours and shadows that are equally stunning at any time of year. Location#1: Es Trenc
Close to home in Ses Salines, this Caribbean-style beach complete with sand dunes is particularly photogenic if you like shooting landscapes.
One of the island’s most pristine natural spots, its white sand and turquoise water shine bright in photos at any time of year—the busy shores are dotted with colourful towels and umbrellas during summer while more deserted and moody during winter.
Location#2: Ses Salines Salt Flats
Also close to Ca’n Bonico, this natural wonder offers pops of bright white and pink thanks to the salt that is harvested here.
The salt pans are visually spectacular, catching the light and changing shade throughout the year. Catch the flamingoes in spring and autumn for added interest within your frame.
Location #3: Cap Salines Lighthouse
Again, beautiful in summer or winter, this impressive landmark is a beacon on the island’s southernmost tip.
The towering white structure creates a wonderful contrast against the blue of the sky and sea, and, on a clear day, you’ll be able to capture Cabrera Island and its natural park, which lies around 10 kilometres off the rocky and rugged coastline. Sunsets are incredibly impressive here, too.
Location #4: Santanyí Market
If you enjoy shooting scenes of everyday life, head to Santanyí Market on a Saturday morning. The golden sandstone streets are alive with stalls selling everything from local cheese and meats to jewellery to bohemian bags and clothes.
Tourists flock here as well as locals. The main square with its church hosts a number of bars and restaurants, which is great for people watching.
Location #5: Cala Llombards
This small, sandy cove (“cala”) framed by cliffs is a real Instagram favourite. During summer, you’ll find a parade of people posing in front of the colourful fishermen’s houses and jumping off the rocks into the sea.
Away from the hordes, there are quieter parts of the dramatic coastline well worth capturing, and if you like aerial shots, drones capture the changing colour of the sea and the shape of the land. Check they’re permitted first, though.
If you prefer to explore further afield, head to Palma’s Old Town for medieval architecture and, of course, the Gothic masterpiece cathedral. The Serra de Tramuntana offers spectacular mountain landscape plus the towns nestled within it, from Valldemossa to Deià. In fact, anywhere on the island can be a photographer’s dream.
