Best sports to practice in Mallorca in winter

In the winter months, Mallorca reveals a quieter side but there is still plenty to do, especially if you’re a sports fan. The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range that spans from southwest to northeast offers endless wild scenery and countless trails—from easy to extreme—for hikers and cyclists. For those who prefer to take things more slowly, golf lovers can enjoy a leisurely game at one of the many golf courses. Whatever you’re into, remember to check the weather forecast before you set out on your next adventure.

Hiking (and some climbing) in Mallorca in winter

Named after the north wind, the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range runs for around 90 kilometres and covers a third of the island, meaning there are plenty of routes to choose from. Fancy climbing a mountain? Try Puig de Galatzó, the highest peak in the southwest Tramuntana. Most involve walking on a steep incline but there is a bit of climbing at the top and the view is worth it—take in the island 360°. Try a coastal walk close to Ca’n Bonico here in Ses Salines. We recommend starting from the Cap de Ses Salines lighthouse and following the path along the sea to the beautiful sandy bay of Cala Marmols, perfect for a picnic and perhaps even a paddle.

Cycling in Mallorca in winter

Take things up a gear and get on a bike to explore the island. From the Tramuntana to the southeast, there are endless routes to enjoy, whether you’re looking for a peaceful ride or to burn up a sweat. If you’re brave enough to take on the hardest cycle climb in Mallorca, we suggest Sobremunt from Andratx to Port de Pollença or the other way around—127 kilometres with 3400 metres of climbing. For an easier ride in the south, take advantage of the area’s nice, flat roads through the countryside known as the ‘Pla de Mallorca’ region to the ‘Migjorn’. Or for an intermediate ride, try the Sant Salvador loop from Ses Salines to the Sant Salvador Sanctuary and the Christ Rei landmark taking around 3 hours.

Golf in Mallorca in winter

Mallorca is home to excellent golf courses and the island is a popular golfing destination. The south offers Vall d’Or Golf close to Porto Colom, with 18 holes and spectacular sea views. Golf Son Antem in Llucmajor is built on flat grounds, making the most of the Mediterranean landscape with 36 holes to inspire your game. Surrounded by a pine forest with olive and almond trees, the fairways become wider and more rugged as they descend towards the coast.
